About this material

Hello, I’m Emma. I’m an artist, writer and educator, and my creative practice moves between drawing, writing and graphic storytelling.

I’ve worked with children through drawing in primary schools and led graphic storytelling workshops with adults. Across this work, I’m interested in how creativity grows through conversation, shared attention and the things we notice together.

In my tutoring, we make room to look, talk, draw and try things out. A child might begin with a tiny detail in an image, a character’s expression or a question about something they’ve read. From there, we explore possibilities, shape ideas and practise the skills that help a story reach its reader.

My aim is to help young writers develop confidence and independence while keeping their curiosity and individual voice at the heart of the work.

You can purchase these materials and work independently with your young writer, or alternatively, contact me to discuss one-to-one tutoring.

Emma Pratt for Koekoeā Studio

Senior Tutor, Course Writer and Workshop Presenter

Emma Pratt is a PhD candidate at Massey University, New Zealand, an artist, writer and an experienced teacher educator with over 20 years’ experience working in international education contexts across the UK, Spain, and New Zealand. Her current language teaching focuses on preparing learners for UK English examination and creative writing, while her earlier work includes teaching and assessing academic writing for IELTS and Cambridge English. She is particularly interested in helping educators understand how teaching can be aligned with established frameworks without losing their individuality. Alongside this, her broader pedagogical interests explore relational and reflective approaches to learning, including how classroom environments, attention, and wellbeing shape the learning experience. She brings a collaborative, practical approach to workshops, grounded in shared experience and open dialogue.

Emma runs Koekoeā Studio, a creative studio that includes workshops that focus on reflective drawing, creative writing for young learners, graphic storytelling and comic for adults, as well as teacher training. She also continues to teach ESOL and academic preparation courses.

Emma has been designing online learning courses since 2013 and was, with Jamie King, a finalist in the ELTons 2014 for Innovation in Teaching
